April 2026:

Happy Spring everyone!  Summer is on its way.  Don’t blink…it could be just a brief moment of sunshine and paradise, or it could be weeks/months of idyllic weather. We simply don’t know.

PROGRESS REPORT:

Eaglexit is forever grateful for all the support of time and money that you, our community of friends and family, have entrusted with us.  We believe that with faith and commitment, we will succeed.

The last time we updated you on our progress, we told you we had submitted our petition, including the Charter, Transition Plan, Legal Brief and supporting documents, to the staff of the Local Boundary Commission for another informal technical review.  They responded with comments and we are just completing our revision of the petition based on their feedback.

There were a number of comments, but the three main things were:

1) Need more details on the budget,

2) Verify we have an interested party willing to work with us to set up the new borough, and

3) Verify we have a working relationship with the MOA.

These are all nearing completion.

  1. Once these tasks are completed: We start the signature collection process. All parts of the petition (Charter, Transition Plan, Briefs, etc.) will be posted on our web site for public scrutiny and review.

  2. We will have about one year to collect signatures.

  3. Once we have the signatures completed and reviewed: Submit for formal technical review.  LBC Staff has 45 days to review and accept for filing.

  4. Once filed: Kicks off process: public notices, public comment period, etc.

  5. During that time, the LBC staff will be holding informational public meetings to present the petition and talk about detachment.  We and they welcome full participation from our community—we can’t do this without you, after all. They make a good faith effort to reach out, facilitated by LBC staff.  Looking for substantive comments, i.e. whether the charter provides accurate info.

  6. LBC:  Preliminary report drafted, have opportunity to respond, etc.

  7. LBC:  Draft final report.

  8. LBC:  Schedule public hearing

  9. There is a period for reconsideration.

  10. Petition is Finalized

  11. If the petition, after all of this, is finalized and approved, we then go to ballot and vote!  We as a community vote to either detach from Anchorage to become fully independent, or stay part of the MOA.  😊

“Will the people of Chugiak-Eagle River have the opportunity to control their own destiny, or must they forever remain subject to what has been decreed for them by Anchorage?”

Lee Jordan, October 29, 1975,

It takes all of us!

Time – Get involved.

Effort – Share with friends and neighbors.

Participate – come to our next Town Hall and bring your friends and family!

Event Schedule:

Next Town Hall:  Thursday, April 23,

Eagle River Lions Club. 7:00pm to 8:00pm.

Free Pizza!

The most common question from our constituents is: Can we afford this?

This town hall will discuss the budget and financials in detail!  I know—not an exciting topic, but if you want the data you need to make an informed decision about detachment, this is the Town Hall for you!

*** NOTE *** We are changing our donation vendor to a local company, so our Donate button is currently not working.  We will send out an announcement when it’s back up.

In Freedom,

Catherine Margolin

Chair, Eaglexit
